Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
