Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
