Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
