Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
