Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
